California Expands Radio Outreach to Support Farmworker Communities

SACRAMENTO — California is strengthening its outreach to farmworker communities through a $100,000 investment to expand radio programing that connects farmworkers to local job training and career opportunities in their area. The Employment Development Department (EDD) awarded these funds to La Cooperativa Campesina de California, a non-profit organization that helps farmworkers in building in-demand job skills to help them advance in a rapidly evolving industry.

California is home to more than 800,000 agricultural workers who play a vital role in the state’s economy. By using a trusted source of information already reaching farmworker communities, this partnership will help make sure workers and their families can access clear, relevant information about employment, training and other valuable services.

Farmworkers employed in California should be provided with clear, accurate, and understandable information regarding their employment, wages, working conditions, health and safety protections,” said Marco Lizarraga, Executive Director of La Cooperativa Campesina de California. “We reach approximately half a million farmworkers with our radio program.

The funding will support La Cooperativa Campesina de California’s Radio Bilingüe programming that aims to ensure farmworker communities are aware of the variety of services available to assist them and how to best access those resources.

This award is 100 percent federally funded by a grant award totaling $100,000 from the U.S. Department of Labor, with no non-federal funding sources.
